JOIN US AT THE 2ND ANNUAL NORTH BAY ZERO WASTE WEEK

Learn how you can reduce the amount of garbage you generate at the second annual North Bay Zero Waste Week, which takes place July 23-30.

The weeklong series of events will showcase zero waste practices and policies that design waste out of the system wherever possible and divert discarded materials away from landfills through composting, reclaiming, reducing, reusing and recycling. Participants can attend online webinars, tour local facilities, get help fixing broken items, learn how to preserve food and compost waste, clean up litter and more.

The event is sponsored by Zero Waste Sonoma, a joint powers authority formed by the county and its nine cities. For a complete listing of events and additional information, visit https://zerowastenorthbay.org/

SIMPLE STEPS TO AVOID EMAIL AND TELEPHONE SCAMS

Want to defend yourself against email and telephone scams? The Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office put out a series of tips this week to help consumers protect themselves.

Scammers often pretend to be companies such as Amazon, Microsoft or other retailers. Here’s how to keep your info safe if you receive an email or phone message that appears to come from a company you do business with:

Check the email of the sender. This can help tip you off if the email is not coming from the actual business. For example a recent email purporting to be an offer from Kohl’s was from “loversops.com” not a Kohl’s address.

Don’t give your info to anyone who contacts you out of the blue. Honest organizations won’t call, email, or text to ask for your info, like your Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers.

Don’t click on any links. If you get an email or text from a company you know and do business with, contact them using a website you know is real. Or look up their phone number — but don’t call a number they gave you or the number displayed on your caller ID.

Update your security software. This will protect your computer and phone from security threats, which could expose your personal or financial info to scammers.
