Sonoma Valley Veterans Building to get advanced heating, ventilation and air conditioning system

SANTA ROSA, CA | October 15, 2024

The Board of Supervisors today authorized the Department of Public Infrastructure to replace the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system in the main lobby and lounge at the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Hall located at 126 1st St. West in Sonoma. The HVAC system upgrades, projected to cost $388,000, include replacing the existing gas-fired heat-only system, which is more than 25 years old, with an electric heat pump that more efficiently heats and cools the facility. The funding will come from the County’s Capital Improvement Project budget.

“This is an important investment in our military families and community, and community groups of all stripes that use Sonoma Veterans Memorial Hall,” said Supervisor Susan Gorin, who represents District 1. “Public assembly facilities play a critical role during disasters as evacuation hubs and emergency shelters, and this system upgrade is another step toward more resilient infrastructure in Sonoma Valley.”

The Sonoma Veterans Memorial building is one of seven Veterans Memorial Buildings in Sonoma County and was constructed in 1951. It was previously operated by Sonoma County Regional Parks and is currently maintained by the Department of Public Infrastructure. The facility serves as a hub for community events, arts programs, veterans organization meetings, and as an emergency shelter, cooling center and charging center during extreme weather.

In 2018, the Board of Supervisors authorized upgrades to the kitchen facility at Sonoma Veterans Memorial Hall. In 2023, the Board approved a $3.5 million project to make the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building more energy efficient and resilient to power outages.
