Special District Offices

Candidate nominations open July 14 at 8:00 a.m. and close August 8 at 5:00 p.m. for seven special districts up for election this November in Sonoma County. Below is a list of the nine offices that could go to election (as of mid-April). However, be aware that this list could still change depending on a variety of factors, including incumbent resignations/deaths. A more detailed list (with term dates and incumbent names) is available at our Offices Up for Election page.

  • Occidental Community Services District
    • Two 4-year seats
  • Bodega Bay Public Utility District
    • One 4-year seat for Office #1
    • One 4-year seat for Office #2
  • Monte Rio Recreation and Park District
    • Two 4-year seats
    • One 2-year seat
  • Russian River Recreation and Park District
    • Two 4-year seats
  • Russian River County Water District
    • Two 4-year seats
  • Sonoma Mountain County Water District
    • Two 4-year seats
  • Timber Cove County Water District
    • Three 4-year seats

If an incumbent officer fails to file by August 8 at 5:00 p.m., then the nomination period for that office is automatically extended to August 13 at 5:00 p.m. for any non-incumbent candidates.

You must be a registered voter in the district in order to run for office. Not sure if you reside in one of these districts? Use our District & Elected Official Lookup.

When nominations close for an office (either August 8 or August 13, depending on whether incumbents file), there are two possible outcomes:

  • If the number of candidates who filed for an office is greater than the number of seats available for that office, then an election is automatically triggered.
  • If the number of candidates who filed for an office is equal to or less than the number of seats available for that office, no election is triggered unless a sufficient number of voters residing in the district sign a petition demanding an election. The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors is responsible for appointing candidates in lieu of an election and selecting candidates to fill any remaining vacancies.
