Road Update - March 7, 2016
Published: March 07, 2016
Two weekend storms brought heavy rain, wind, and damage to various Sonoma County roads. Calls began Friday night with a down tree that closed Bodega Avenue at Skillman Lane for several hours, and continued through the early hours this morning with a 2 am call due to a landslide that closed a portion of Fort Ross Road. In between, roads crews responded to numerous calls throughout the weekend for flooding, down trees, and slides. Most notable was a tree that fell into a creek along Street Helena Road near Summit Trail that uprooted a good portion of one lane of the road. Other issues that the Healdsburg crew dealt with included flooding and trees on Eastside Road, flooding on Windsor Road, tree down across Dry Creek Road, and a large tree that brought down power and phone lines on Geysers Road in Cloverdale. Annapolis crew responded to a large landslide on Stewarts Point Skaggs Springs Road on Sunday.
At various times, the Cotati crew closed Valley Ford Road, Valley Ford Freestone Road, and Rohnert Park Expressway due to flooding. In addition to the tree on Bodega Avenue Friday night, Cotati also responded to a down tree that closed Old Redwood Highway around 7 am Saturday morning. In the Sonoma area the crews responded to a rock slide on Trinity Road and a large tree down across Carriger Road.
Guerneville crews were busy with several landslides including one on Bohemian Highway, two on King Ridge Road, one on Meyers Grade Road, and another on Old Cazadero Road at Cherry Street. Additionally several trees came down on Green Valley Road along with the flooding at Green Valley Creek and Atascadero Creek.
Currently, Valley Ford Road at Highway 1 and Green Valley Road are the only roads closed due to flooding this morning.
One lane traffic is allowed on Fort Ross Road at two slide locations, and Street Helena Road at Summit Trail.
Road crews will be clearing slides and tree debris this week, unclogging drainage ditches and culvert, filling potholes and responding to various problems that will arise with the coming rains forecast for later this week.
