You must be a registered voter residing in the district in which you want to run for office. Not sure if you reside in one of these districts? Use our District & Elected Official Lookup.
If an incumbent officer fails to file by August 8 at 5:00 p.m., then the nomination period for that office is automatically extended to August 13 at 5:00 p.m. for any non-incumbent candidates.
When nominations close for an office (either August 8 or August 13, depending on whether all incumbents file), there are two possible outcomes:
- If the number of candidates who filed for an office is greater than the number of seats available for that office, then an election is automatically triggered.
- If the number of candidates who filed for an office is equal to or less than the number of seats available for that office, no election is triggered unless a sufficient number of voters residing in the district sign a petition demanding an election. The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors is responsible for appointing candidates in lieu of an election and selecting candidates to fill any remaining vacancies.
